Middletown Friday

Friday, March 4: "The Art of Speed" Hot Rod and Kustom Kulture Art Show @ MAC Gallery in Middletown

Speaking of stuff to do this week, Middletown's MAC 650 Gallery is hosting the opening of "The Art of Speed" Hot Rod and Kustom Kulture Art Show. Go for the socializing, stay for the cool car art. Or, do it the other way around... whichever you prefer.

Don't hurry out of town when the arty party is over. We've heard a local band called Straddledaddy (um, ew) may be drawing a crowd down the street to Hair of the Dog, and the official art show afterparty is being held at Eli Cannon's Tap Room. I recently spent a lovely Sunday afternoon at Eli's and was reminded of how much I enjoy their huge beer selection and quirky decor. Hope to see you there!

Naked in Middletown

Friday, November 5: Art Bares All @ MAC 650 Gallery, Middletown
We're excited about "Art Bares All" because this group show and live art experience is all about naked bodies, and who doesn't like naked bodies? Well, repressed hypocrites, that's who. But we know better. Underneath our clothes, we've all got a naked body of our own, and thanks to years of therapy - and literally months of yoga - we've learned to embrace them.

Middletown's North End Artists Cooperative is putting on this show, which will involve works by 30 area artists and will feature live body painting and other kits-off phenomena, earning this event an 18+ designation, which means every body there is basically legal for embracing.

Artist friends-of-the-blog H.L. Groen and Christian Ayala will be representing, and many more.

DJ Originate in Middletown

The Scenics just love Middletown, but we don't go there often, so it's great to find out about new places and events to check out there. In an effort to be a better blog and tell you about more and more CT happenings, we've taken to asking our FB crew via desperate status updates to send us emails (because we hate reading FB event invitations)... and not two minutes later, we got an email from one Pirate Alula (our newest favorite graphic designer?) about a new DJ/dance night at Tommy's, featuring DJ Originate. And beer pong! And pizza and a patio, which sounds an awful lot like one of our Hartford hangs. CT being the small pond that it is, we quickly found this video footage of Mr. Originate on the Youtube doing his spin thing at an event that also featured our friends, ballet hipsters CONNetic Dance, much to the bewilderment of the children onlookers... We don't know much about this "Dubstep" but this music kind of makes us want to take drugs. Haha, just kidding.

Good Times, Scenic Envy in Middletown

After our donut date in Manchester, we made our way to Middletown, a mythical village where the firetrucks are yellow - how droll.

We were greeted immediately by an public display of kitsch.

How twee. Actually, Mommy Scenic has always maintained that The Giving Tree is a fucked up story - about a maternal figure who gives and gives and gives... to death. Good point, mom!

Our intended destination was It's Only Natural famous vegetarian restaurant but it was a lovely day for touring so we decided to take a stroll down Main Street and see what there was to see. We saw about a zillion "ethnic" cuisine spots we'd love to try... if only we could have afforded it (and if Katie Scenic still had the physiological ability to throw up), we would have taken a bulemic tour of Middletown and tried one of everything! (Just kidding.) We were impressed by the wealth of outdoor dining (and the width of the sidewalk!), and admired various antiques and other unfortunately closed storefronts that call for further investigation. We thought, this town is what you'd get if Northampton and New Haven got gay married and had a baby (with a little help from an unnamed donor). We decided that we could afford to whet our appetites with a taste of Tschudin chocolate, which was pricey (like $2.25 per piece), but tasty. Jackie had something called a Johnny Depp, and Katie tried an Irish Ginger. That sounds a little naughty, doesn't it? Tschudin was good, but not as good as West Hartford's similarly pricey Bridgewater Chocolates, which are just ridiculous (buy us some, please).

Dinner at It's Only Natural was pretty much brilliant. We shared a sweet potato enchilada (a standard menu item) and a tofu and vegetable curry from the specials menu. The food tasted exquisite, and proved totally photogenic, so we'll let the pictures do the talking so we can get back to making dumb jokes:

Right, so...we're pretty much "always blogging," like even when we're doing other stuff, we're thinking and talking about blogging it up. So as the sun set and darkness fell we were composing this post, waxing poetic about "basking in the warm satanic glow of the neon carrot."

LOL. We were also very impressed with the art on display by people we totally know from the Libertine Collective:

(H.L. Groen)

After dinner we hit up some local drinking spots with some lady friends from the area. We started out at Hair of the Dog Saloon, which we regret to announce had little redeeming value. Pretty divey, obnoxious jukebox, nary a hipster to be seen. It did have these amusing deer heads mounted over the bar though:

We moved along as soon as we met the credit card minimum (lame-o). We went just down the block and across the street (Main Street, duh) to Eli Cannon's, a joint we have visited before, but quite neglectfully so, as on our previous outing we did not explore their epic beer garden (or ho-garden, as we hilariously dubbed it once we had enough bitches there drinking Belgian brews...). Epic:

At this point we were basically full and broke, so we mostly just watched other people eat and drink, and flirted with the waiter, who made sure to show us pics of his kid so we would know it was just waiterly charm he was putting on. We observed that Eli's has some fine looking salads and serves up monstrous portions of dishes like their fish and chips.

We drove home with belly's full of wholesome chyme and heads of scenic envy. Middletown: we're not finished with you.

Oh swoon - it's our boyfriend!

Friday, March 19: Jann Klose @ Buttonwood Tree, Middletown

We found Jann Klose to be ever so charming, both musically and personally when he played at Sully's in the fall. We're glad to see he's returning to our area this week for a show at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown. We've never been there. It sounds awfully wholesome though. Well, Jann sounds pretty wholesome too. He has the loveliest voice. Jann was on teevee in CT recently, check it out:

Fun Fact: Jann's bass player (who will be playing the Buttonwood event) has performed and recorded with Jay-Z.

Fun Opinion: Jay-Z's newest song/video is just great. Somebody bring us back some money. Please!

Shag Frenzy: Back in the Saddle

Saturday, Feb. 20: Shag Frenzy @ The Shadow Room, Middletown

Shag Frenzy, now Middletown's "Indie Disco Party," took the month of January off to have a kid (congrats), but now their/her shagging bits are ready for action again, and we're happy to see their "Post Valentine's Day Love-in," is a party with no cover - love really is free, wouldn't you know? Gas and booze are not free though, so anyone wanting to chauffeur our broke asses around, wine and/or dine us that night, drop us a line.
